Visual of the Week

Photographer: Nkululeko Ndlovu
Some BTS from the photographer:
It was quite a bad day when I took that photo. I was writing my first sports article, so I was panicked about getting the right facts about the game. Worse, it was raining. My camera was getting wet and all the other photographers had enormous telephoto lenses. I just used my 300mm kit lens. I was just in quite an anxious place. Then all of a sudden I get distracted by the game and Maties are about to score a try. It was a maul and the forwards were having a great game. So, I just found a good position to stand, which was just off perpendicular, then I snapped the photo! I didn't expect Photo of the Week but I knew it was a front page photo. Moral of the story - forget all the bad things happening and get on with what's in front of you - Nkululeko Ndlovu
Dear Reader,
Our first news cycle has felt like somewhat of a tsunami: welling up out of nowhere, towering above us as we watched, quivering at its feet. Chaos ensued. Tears were shed over copy torn to shreds by our editors (we were still acclimatising to handing ‘our babies’ up the production line). Coffees and cigarettes disappeared and reappeared in our hands almost simultaneously. Cartons of milk gradually accumulated in the department’s fridge, imbuing an unsolicited sense of permanence, along with our domestic squabbles about who hadn’t washed their coffee mugs. I knew it was over when Duné put a plant next to her computer and Amy pinned up a collage of photos of the life she had to leave behind. This place was fast becoming home.
We have perhaps stumbled our way into the process but now seem to be tentatively standing on our own (and sometime each other’s) two feet. We’ve typed, we’ve talked, we’ve laughed, and sometimes screamed, all to the rhythm of an imaginary printing press that has brought our first collection of articles to your screen.
So with this, SMF News brings you an exciting collection of stories ranging from flash mobs in SU’s lecture halls that have gone viral on TikTok and yet another victory for the Maroon Machines, to an aquathon hosted to raise funds for para-athletes and dissatisfaction with student leaders’ handling of accommodation protests.
Hop over to our website to take a look at the full range of articles we released during our first cycle. We welcome criticism (even if we cry about it), so don’t be shy!
Yours, in solidarity with SMF’s soldiers
