On a more positive note

Dear reader,
This week, the BAHons Journalism class saw a record number of sick students skipping class. I am calling it skipping because I am slightly bitter that I am one of the healthy ones who did not get to stay home. I am sure everyone had the appropriate doctor’s letters as required.
We are all in better physical condition and spirits today. I am aware that my letters are frequently infused with a slight air of negativity, but ultimately there is much to be positive about. We started with our Arts Journalism submodule this week (yay!), which spurred the whole class into debates about the role and value of art. Our dendrites are fully activated for the coming weeks of SMF production.
In other good news:
Thando Volontiya, a self-taught ice cream specialist, started his business, GQ Creamery, in his apartment two years ago. On 1 September, Volontiya will open his own ice cream store in Newton Park. This is according to an article by Nkosazana Ngwadla published on 17 August.
Mook Lion, a well-known South African street artist, was recently commissioned to create murals for a conservation hub in the Eastern Cape. According to the writer, “it’s a vision of hope and what’s possible when people and nature work together”. The article was published by Savanna Douglas on 20 August.
SANParks has teamed up with non-profit organisations and local communities to launch the Rhino Renaissance Campaign, which is aimed at restoring the population of white rhinos in the Kruger National Park. “It’s changing the rhino conservation narrative from death and despair to one of a rhino renaissance,” said Rhino Renaissance director Dave Varty. This is according to an article published by the Good Work Foundation on 20 August.
While so-called “soft news” does not always draw the most attention, it is important to remind ourselves that positive change is always happening! For SMF good news, check out the article Cloetesville learner to represent SA in China by journalist Christopher Naidoo.

Get to know me!
What is your favourite song and who is your favourite artist?
It would be hard to say what my favourite song of all time is, but my favourite song currently is Flesh without Blood by Grimes. Favourite artist? Ariana Grande. I have literally been a stan since 2013 — I love that woman so much it’s a bit concerning.
What is your favourite film?
My favourite film is definitely Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). What I would give to experience that film for the first time again. Some honourable mentions are Corpse Bride (2005), Tangled (2010) and The Wild Robot (2024).
What is your favourite book, and what are you currently reading?
I don’t think I have a favourite book. To be honest, I love so many. My current read is Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yaros.
What is your favourite place you’ve ever visited and why?
Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal. I just have so many amazing memories from that place with my friends back home.
If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Ariana Grande. As I said, the love I have for that woman is really concerning. Haha.
If you weren’t studying journalism, what would you be doing?
I think I’d be studying film or English literature.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I’m a doll collector. No, not the creepy porcelain ones, but fashion dolls. I mostly collect Monster High and Bratz :)
What is your current guilty pleasure?
Girl, it’s junk food lol.
What do you do if you’re not busy working?
Mostly sleeping. But if I’m not sleeping, I’m either watching a movie, reading or playing video games.
What do you want to achieve this year?
If I have to be completely honest, I don’t know anymore. All I know is that I’m taking each day as it comes and I’m trying my best to make the most of this lifetime.
